Punta de Mita is located on a peninsula on Mexico’s Pacific Coast, at the north end of Banderas Bay. Only ten miles north of Puerto Vallarta, Punta de Mita is home to some of Mexico’s finest and most exclusive resorts.
Human settlement in Punta de Mita dates from at least 200 B.C. as evidenced by the ruins Careyeros Hill, an ancient observatory and ceremonial site believed to have been constructed by the Aztatlan culture.
More recently, the people of Punta de Mita made their living primarily through fishing until the mellow, year-round quality surf waves just off the coast were discovered by surfers. There are more than a dozen breaks facing various directions on the peninsula, so you can always find a good spot to surf no matter the direction of the swell or wind.
Other activities to be enjoyed during your stay in Punta de Mita include hiking, mountain biking, sailing, snorkeling, sport fishing, kayaking and scuba diving. From November to March, you can take a boat tour and watch the humpback whales that come here every year to mate and calve.
The region known as Punta de Mita is comprised of two small towns, El Coral and Emiliano Zapata, as well as the gated real estate development known as Punta Mita, where you’ll find a beach club, exclusive golf courses and luxury resorts.
Punta de Mita has gained recognition as one of the foremost golfing resorts in the world. It is home to two world class golf courses designed by golf legend Jack Nicklaus. The first course to be built, Punta Mita Pacifico, is a par-72 course famous for its unique signature island hole. The optional 19th hole known as “The Tail of the Whale”, named for its green designed in the shape of a whale’s tail, is the largest natural island green in the world. Punta de Mita’s other championship golf course, the Punta Mita Bahía, was also designed by Nicklaus and features six ocean holes with breathtaking views of the Pacific Ocean. Both courses are exclusively for Punta Mita homeowners and their guests as well as guests of the Four Seasons Punta Mita Resort and the St. Regis Punta Mita Resort.
Punta Mita Real Estate is rapidly becoming one of Mexico’s most sought-after beach locations for real estate investment. Punta Mita real estate has a restricted occupancy rate, in some areas as little as nine bedrooms per 2 1/2 acres. Since the number of landowners is limited, most of the development is geared toward the luxury market. However, Punta Mita does have several residential communities for those interested in a more modest abode such as a condominium or townhouse. El Anclote in El Coral has several small beachfront condominium projects as well.
